A resort-based dive holiday can run to luxury prices, but the same reefs, and in the deep south often better ones, can be dived from local islands and small guesthouses for a fraction of the cost. What you pay depends almost entirely on where you sleep, not what you see underwater.

The three ways to dive the Maldives
Resort diving. You stay at a resort with an in-house dive centre and dive the surrounding sites. Convenient, comfortable, and the most expensive route: two-tank boat trips commonly land between USD 150 and 250 with equipment, on top of resort room rates. Packages of ten or more dives bring the per-dive price down.
Liveaboard diving. You live on a boat that moves between atolls, diving three or four times a day. Typical boats run from around USD 200 to 400 per person per night, diving included, with premium vessels above that. An Open Water certification in the Maldives generally runs USD 500 to 700 depending on the operator. If your goal is simply to try, a single introductory dive is usually USD 100 to 150. Where the deep south changes the maths
Huvadhu's advantage is not just price, it is what the money buys. In the busy central atolls you share marquee sites with many boats; the cost per dive may be similar, but the cost per uncrowded encounter is not.
